Hi all, please feel free to input if you think this idea has merit or I'm looney...

I have reserved the URL's  sharethebay.com and .org

San Diego has about 300 days of boating weather per year, but many of our teens as well as seniors never get a chance to see the Bay unless they charter a fishing boat (yuck). I'd love to set up a non-profit that would allow us to get 12=15 people at a time out on the bay and beyond in a nice catamaran like an Africat.  The only thing holding me up is about a million bucks or so!!!

But it would be such a great experience, just look at the May archive in boatingpotd to get an idea of what can be seen in ocean in the San Diego area.

I do have Share the Bay set up as a California corporation, but I have not applied for non-profit status for it at this point.

Any input or experience with non-profits would be appreciated, thanks.

I know, bad time in the economy to set up such a financially-intensive project, but maybe someone will donate a nice boat for us to use instead of the catamaran, who knows?

Regards

Bill

Long, long ago a guy where I worked bought a brand new sailing trimaran and kept it at SD.  After just a few years he tired of it and tried to sell.  Absolutely nobody wanted such an odd boat.  So he ended up donating it to the Boy Scouts!

Point being: if you're not fussy about the pedigree of the boat: and have a strong charity angle: it may be doable.
